The project aims to develop a fully operational farm management platform where drone-based aerial imagery (RGB, multispectral, hyperspectral, thermal) is transformed into interoperable data and fused with other farm datasets. The objective is to provide farmers with real-time decision support for irrigation, crop health, and early disease detection. The main challenge is how to process and standardise large, heterogeneous aerial image datasets and integrate them seamlessly with existing agricultural data sources. To solve this, the project develops semantic data models, scalable data pipelines, and visualisation tools based on FIWARE technology, and validates them through pilot demonstrations in Norway and Europe.
Climate change and more frequent droughts pose major risks for Norwegian wheat production. Breeding resilient varieties requires new digital tools that go beyond traditional field trials and basic UAV imaging. In this project, we will develop digital twins and explainable AI models that integrate UAV-based sensing, crop growth models, and environmental and genomic data. The goal is to define ideotypes – plant types with optimal traits for drought resilience – and provide breeders with actionable decision-support. The R&D challenge lies in combining complex data sources into predictive, transparent models, something not available today. The project will use a systematic method: UAV data collection, model calibration, data fusion, AI development, and validation in field trials. The outcome will be new knowledge, prototype services, and advanced UAV-based analytics, enabling more robust breeding strategies and sustainable food production.
Inspection of wooden utility poles is still performed manually today, with people travelling many kilometers per year, to check few thousands of wooden poles using techniques like hammering, drilling holes or 3D surface scanning. Those efforts are time-consuming and also require experienced personnel for a successful inspection. We aim for an inspection method, involving a mobile platform and AI software that enables robust remote inspection, by handheld deployment or from an installed device on a drone.
This project aims to develop a mobile sensor solution for remote inspection of wooden utility pole infrastructures. By integrating an innovative radar sensor with 3D vision, IoT module, software for online processing and visualization, we aim to establish combined surface and subsurface scanning remotely to estimate heath index of wooden poles. This solution can be deployed in the field or in factory for wood inspection and commercialized to energy infrastructure owners and operators.
Offshore wind is a fast-growing industry, and the need to regularly inspect the wind turbines is huge. Traditionally, this has been done by climbers, but this is a risky and labor-intensive process. This project will improve drone based inspections of offshore wind turbines safer and more efficient. The system will consist of a dynamic platform with six degrees of freedom, a locking mechanism, wireless energy transfer, a high-capacity near-field communication solution, a near-field navigation system and a control system for autonomous take-off and landing.
The platform will give the drone a stable landing spot, even in bad weather. The locking mechanism will ensure that the drone is not damaged or lost during landing. Wireless energy transfer will make it possible to charge the drone without having to connect it to the platform. The near-field navigation system will help the drone find its way to the platform and land safely.
The farmer's societal mission has increased in importance, as they must produce more food for a growing number of
people on a smaller area and in a more sustainable way - parallel to society's increased focus on the world's food
security, degree of self-sufficiency and improved sustainability in food production. In order for the farmer to try to
fulfill these requirements, he must have access to tools, resources, technology and new knowledge and science. This
is the premise for the project's societal relevance.
The project seeks to create interoperability between different technology providers towards the farmer, who in turn
will experience it as a "one stop shop" and ease accessibility as all providers will communicate and be available in
the same digital service, i.e. on the same software platform. The solution is therefore a data-based service that
makes it possible to reduce time consumption, simplify and coordinate processes, and increase the farmer's options
for ordering services online.
In the current situation, the farmer must contact each individual supplier and order the services directly. At the end
of the SMARAGD project, the goal is that everyone is integrated with each other so that it is easier for the farmer to
take advantage of the jungle of providers and services. In addition, the project must have a commercial perspective,
where the sustainability perspective is visible and the value of interdisciplinary collaboration increases the degree of
innovation. The project will result in a concrete and functioning service for the farmer.
In the past decade, the ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF) imaging method has been introduced to identify defects in wafer-based crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules such as for detection of cell cracks. However, this technique is mainly used in a lab environment under control environmental conditions for inspection in production lines.
Therefore, this technique is not well explored for outdoor field inspection as several issues need to be solved such as
difficulty to get high contrast images due to disturbance of ambient lighting and practical challenges in achieving
long UVF exposure without threatening safety precaution. This research has the goal to elaborate on ultraviolet
fluorescence for field inspection of photovoltaic modules and to analyze and qualify a UVF vision system for enabling
outdoor aerial inspection. Solar energy installations are steadily increasing in the world also in Norway with ten
thousands of modules installed on the roof every year. The raise of the solar energy business is constrained by two
major needs (1) to drastically decrease the operations and maintenance costs in order to shorten the time for return
of investment and (2) to perform inspection without sunlight (e.g. during night, in cloudy weather).
Several companies are offering inspection services to reduce the manual inspection burden and costs using both thermal
and visual imaging. This inspection can only be performed within sun hours while modules are activated through sunlight. In Nordic countries such as Norway, this inspection technique has limited time slots because of the restricted number of sun hours per year either due to short days e.g. winter period or cloudy weather in a large portion of the year. This research will combine a directional UV light beam and multiple exposure imaging to elaborate on high-contrast UVF imaging.
Handling and transportation of goods is a manual process with great operational risk. Goods handling at ports and
logistics hubs require large teams of workers, and is dangerous and prone to human error. For a typical logistics hub
or port, 50-60% of the total costs are related to labour. Accidents and work-related injuries are common, and in the
period 2009-2014 in Norway, the following industries represent 67% of the total casualties; construction industry
(59), transportation and logistics (44), agriculture and fishing (43) and industry in general (33).
By remotely controlled & autonomous handling and transportation of goods, calculations show that it is possible to reduce labour costs with 40% to 60%, and almost completely remove accidents causing casualties and work-related
injuries. Increased use of remote control & autonomy enables increased competitiveness despite high labour cost.
Drones for priority-deliveries to e.g. offshore sites will increase efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.
We aim to develop a technology in form of software, sensors and compute devices that will function as the “eyes, senses and brain” turning forklifts, drones and cranes into smart, collaborative devices. This will allow manually- and autonomously controlled transportation devices to interact in uncontrolled environments with self-awareness,
smart AI perception of the surroundings, including machine-to-machine communication.
More specifically, the project aims to develop perception- and robotic control technology through computer vision
and artificial intelligence, allowing autonomous control and interaction of cranes, forklifts and drones, thus enabling
autonomous handling of goods.
Maritime traffic is steadily raising SO2 emissions with negative impacts on environment and health. Current maritime
authorities practices include using staff on ships entering the port to collect and analyze fuel samples, that is labor intensive, or using stationary sniffers at checkpoints, that is not reliable as most ships can switch off the engine while
passing on the momentum below sniffers. The project aims to develop a technology supporting law enforcement
authorities with the ability to remotely detect and monitor SO2 emissions from vessels.
During the project, Canadian and Norwegian SME and research teams will collaborate to develop a sensor system for
remote monitoring of SO2 emissions from ship exhaust and deduce the fuel sulfur content. Since 2020, International
Maritime Organization (IMO) decision entered into force for global fuel sulfur limit of 0.50%. The overall ambition of
REMON-SO2 project is to facilitate maritime authorities to enforce environmental regulations by establishing and
demonstrating a system that help them to remotely detect, identify and quantify SO2 emissions in real-time and
identify the corresponding sulfur content.
